Making Ground

An exhibition celebrating KwaZulu-Natal design, sponsored by Belgotex.

Making Ground’s title is inspired by the poem, Dunes by A. R. Ammons and references the resilience found in the face of precarity and scarcity in the KZN creative sector - where ‘firm ground is not available ground’.

Despite this, the province continues to incubate talent, and the exhibition spotlights the excellence and ingenuity of KZN practitioners who are shaping contemporary South African material culture. Spanning rugs, textiles, woven materiality, ceramics, basketry and industrial design, the exhibition is arranged across four curatorial themes of industrial, mythic, earthen and geometric explorations. The display gives audiences an immersive and compelling look at the distinctive design voices in the province, and calibre of creative work being produced. 

Making Ground is curated by Lauren Lockhart-Barker of The Forgotten Flexible and Angela Shaw, co-founder of the KZN Art Fair.
